Cloud Native Stockholm Platform Engineering Meetup

The Cloud Native Stockholm (CNCF) community met on 22 October for an evening on platform engineering, with Stakater's Rasheed Amir on the bill. His talk, "Building Your Own Cloud With Kubernetes", walked the architecture behind turning Kubernetes into a cloud people can actually consume: KCP for a multi-tenant API, Crossplane for composition, operators for the rest — and an honest look at the hard problems in between. Hosted at IBM Stockholm, sponsored by Red Hat and IBM.

Building Your Own Cloud With Kubernetes

KCP, Crossplane, and the hard problems between a cluster and a cloud

Rasheed Amir — Founder & CEO, Stakater

Kubernetes has become the foundation for running modern applications. But what if we take the same declarative model one step further and use Kubernetes to build the cloud itself — so users simply request a VM, a cluster, a database or a GPU environment, and the platform handles provisioning, policy, lifecycle and operations?

This talk walks that architecture: KCP as a scalable API and multi-tenancy layer, Crossplane for composition, and operators for service-specific automation. But provisioning is the easy part — the real work is tenant isolation, identity, policy, secrets, observability, quotas and cost, tied into a consistent self-service experience.

Drawing on Stakater Cloud, which runs on this architecture in production, the talk is honest about where Kubernetes-native abstractions work well, where they start to leak, and what it takes to turn a collection of cloud-native tools into a coherent platform.

The goal isn't to recreate AWS. It's to explore how Kubernetes can be the foundation for your own cloud — an internal platform, a sovereign cloud, or a customer-facing service.

What you'll walk away with

  • What actually turns infrastructure into a cloud — and why provisioning isn't it
  • The two-plane architecture: a configuration plane over independent execution clusters
  • The tenant-isolation decision you can't undo: why no tenant should hold a reference to a real cluster
  • How any API becomes a priced, self-service offering
  • Where Kubernetes-native abstractions leak — and what you still have to build
